Trademark Policy

At UMass, the Trademark and Licensing Administration is responsible for managing all university-related trademarks. All UMass trademarks belong to the UMass Board of Trustees and are registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).


 

Registering a Trademark Through Your Department

Our office helps guide departments through the trademark registration process. We don't charge for our services - only the official filing fees from the USPTO or any external legal counsel apply.

How to Get Started

  1. Complete the Trademark Questionnaire:
    Your department head must fill this out and include any requested materials.
  2. Schedule a Review Call:
    Set up a meeting with our director to review your answers. This helps us determine the correct USPTO category for your trademark. If deemed appropriate the director will include the University鈥檚 IP attorney.

Fees

  • See the for current costs.
  • Fees are charged per trademark, per class, and are billed at the start of the process.
  • Include your department鈥檚 business office contact info for proper billing.
  • Additional fees may come up during the 10-year registration period. We'll notify you for approval if that happens, and fees may change if the USPTO updates their rates.
